Royals trying to stay unbeaten

Apr 4, 2008 - 12:27 PM Kansas City (3-0) at Minnesota (1-3) 8:10 pm EDT

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) - One of baseball's laughingstocks over the past few seasons, the Kansas City Royals may be the ones having a good chuckle right now.

The Royals - off to their best start in five years - look to improve to 4-0 when they open a three-game set with the Minnesota Twins on Friday.

Kansas City, which lost a total of 403 games on its way to finishing last in the American League Central in each of the past four seasons, is off to its best start since opening 9-0 in 2003 - the last time the franchise finished with a winning record (83-79).

Alex Gordon continued his second-half surge from last season with two homers and four RBI in the opening series with Detroit, including a two-run shot in Thursday's 4-1 win.

The Royals held the Tigers - the third highest-scoring team in the majors last season - to five runs in a three-game sweep this week, striking out 24 batters over 29 innings.

Kansas City's John Bale hopes to keep that momentum going when he takes the mound for the first time this season.

The lefthander, who was a key member of the Royals' bullpen last season, will be making his first major league start since September 18, 2003, while he was with Cincinnati.

He'll be opposed by Scott Baker, who went 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA in three starts against the Royals in 2007. Overall, the lefthander went 9-9 with a 4.26 ERA in 23 starts and one relief appearance in 2007.
