Nationals look to shake off first loss of season
Apr 4, 2008 - 12:59 PM Washington (3-1) at St Louis (2-1) 8:15 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The Washington Nationals aim to bounce back from their first loss of the season on Friday when they visit the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game series.
Washington appeared on its way to a 4-0 start, as it jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead over Philadelphia on Thursday.
However, starter Jason Bergmann was unable to hold the lead and the Phillies rallied for a 8-7 win in 10 innings. Reigning National League MVP Jimmy Rollins scored the game-winning run when Jayson Werth drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Nationals look to shake off the tough loss and start 4-1 for the first time since 2001, when the franchise was still in Montreal.
Odalis Perez, who was a surprise starter on Opening Day, makes his second start of the season. Perez was not even on the 40-man roster when the Nationals opened spring training.
The 30-year-old lefthander allowed one run and five hits in five innings. He was long gone by the time Ryan Zimmerman hit a walk-off home run in the ninth to lead the Nationals to a 3-2 win over Atlanta in their new ballpark on Sunday.
St. Louis, which is coming off a 3-0 win over the defending NL champion Colorado Rockies on Thursday, send Braden Looper to the hill.
Looper went 12-12 with a 4.94 ERA in his first full season a starter after spending his entire career as a reliever.
