Royals look to bounce back from first loss

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) - The Kansas City Royals will look to avoid a second straight loss when they visit the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

The Royals made news this opening week with a three-game series sweep of the Detroit Tigers - one of the favorites to win the American League Central.

But Kansas City was defeated on Friday, dropping a 4-3 decision at the Metrodome. The Royals held a 3-1 lead after the second inning, but the Twins tied it up with a pair of runs in the third and then took the lead for good on Adam Everett's sacrifice bunt in the fourth.

Kansas City's offense sputtered after the third, with Scott Baker, Pat Neshek and Joe Nathan combining for seven scoreless innings to close the game.

The Royals will take their hacks against veteran righthander Livan Hernandez (1-0, 2.57 ERA) on Saturday. The Twins' newcomer made the Opening Day start for his new team, picking up the win while allowing two runs in seven innings against the Angels.

Having spent the first 12 seasons of his career in the National League, Hernandez has yet to face Kansas City.

The Royals will counter with ace Gil Meche (0-0, 4.50). The righthander allowed three runs and eight hits over six innings against the Tigers on Opening Day.

He owns a 6-3 career mark with a 4.05 ERA in 12 career starts against Minnesota.
