Orioles hope to continue power surge vs. Mariners

Apr 5, 2008 - 2:43 PM Seattle (2-2) at Baltimore (2-1) 7:05 pm EDT

BALTIMORE (Ticker) - Power hitting was not a trait seen all that often last season for the Baltimore Orioles. Through three games, they appear to have corrected that problem.

The Orioles target their third straight win on Saturday when they host the Seattle Mariners.

Last season, Baltimore finished 11th in the 14-team American League in home runs with 142. However - after Brian Roberts and Aubrey Huff each hit home runs in Wednesday's win vs. Tampa Bay - the Orioles homered three more times in Friday's 6-4 series-opening win over the Mariners.

Adam Loewen will be the latest Baltimore pitcher hoping to benefit from the renewed offensive explosion when he takes the mound for the first time in nearly a year.

The lefthander, who was 2-0 with a 3.56 ERA last season, was limited to six starts after suffering a stress fracture in his left elbow.

He will be opposing Miguel Batista who will make his first start of the season after he recorded a save in Wednesday's 4-1 victory over the Texas Rangers. The righthander was pressed into duty as a reliever on Wednesday after closer J.J. Putz went on the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day.
