Sabathia tries to bounce back when Indians face Athletics
Apr 5, 2008 - 2:49 PM Cleveland (2-2) at Oakland (2-3) 4:07 pm EDTOAKLAND, California (Ticker) - C.C. Sabathia's 2008 debut did not go as planned for the Cleveland Indians.
Sabathia and the Indians look for an improved effort on Saturday when they continue a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics.
The reigning American League Cy Young award winner, Sabathia (0-0) surrendered five runs and six hits while walking three, but did not factor in the decision as Cleveland endured a 10-8 setback to the Chicago White Sox on Monday.
The 27-year-old lefthander struck out seven but was pulled after throwing 100 pitches in 5 1/3 innings.
The Indians need Sabathia to step up after suffering their second straight loss on Friday during a 6-3 loss to Oakland in the series opener.
Despite the loss, Ryan Garko and Travis Hafner both hit solo home runs - their first of the season.
Lefthander Dana Eveland, who was acquired in the trade that sent righthander Dan Haren to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the offseason, makes his Athletics debut when he takes the mound on Saturday.
