Rays seek third straight win over Yanks

Apr 6, 2008 - 1:05 PM Tampa Bay (3-1) at Ny Yankees (2-3) 1:05 pm EDT

BRONX, New York (Ticker) - The Tampa Bay Rays aim for their third straight win over the New York Yankees when the teams continue a four-game series Sunday.

Tampa Bay won the first game, 13-4, on Friday and held on for a 6-3 victory against Andy Pettitte and New York on Saturday.

Jonny Gomes hit a three-run homer and Edwin Jackson gave up one run over six innings in Saturday's win.

James Shields (1-0, 2.57 ERA) makes his second start of the season for Tampa Bay. The righthander won his first outing of the campaign, limiting Baltimore to two runs over seven innings in a 6-2 victory.

Shields was abysmal against the Yankees last season, losing both of his starts while pitching to a 14.46 ERA.

New York counters with Chien-Ming Wang (1-0, 2.57), who worked seven strong innings in beating Toronto in his first start of the season.

Wang was 2-1 with a 4.42 ERA in three starts against the Rays last season.

New York, which went 10-8 against Tampa Bay last season, has been without manager Joe Girardi for the first two games of the series due to an illness. Bench coach Rob Thomson has managed in his place.
