Beckett to make season debut Sunday

Apr 6, 2008 - 1:09 PM Boston (3-3) at Toronto (3-2) 1:07 pm EDT

TORONTO (Ticker) - Josh Beckett is expected to make his season debut Sunday as the Boston Red Sox try to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Beckett, who was 20-7 with a 3.27 ERA, was expected to take the mound on March 25 when Boston opened the season against the Oakland Athletics in Japan. However, the 2007 American League Cy Young Award runner-up failed to make the trip when back spasms kept him in the states for the first two games.

His challenge this time around will be to halt the Red Sox's struggles against the Blue Jays, who have won the last eight meetings between the teams dating to last season.

Toronto will counter with Roy Halladay (0-1, 3.86 ERA), who struggled against the Red Sox last season, going 1-3 with a 5.94 ERA in five starts.

The righthander permitted three earned runs over seven innings, but took the loss in Tuesday's 3-2 setback against the New York Yankees.
