Myers hopes to rebound from poor start

Apr 6, 2008 - 1:32 PM Philadelphia (2-3) at Cincinnati (3-2) 1:15 pm EDT CINCINNATI (Ticker) - If Brad Lidge makes his season debut on Sunday, it will likely be because of the work of the Philadelphia Phillies' last closer.

Brett Myers attempts to collect his first win of the season when the Phillies face the Cincinnati Reds in the third of a four-game series.

The offseason acquisition of Lidge from the Houston Astros was enough to convince Philadelphia to turn Myers back into a starter after he recorded 21 saves a season ago. Lidge opened the season on the disabled list after undergoing knee surgery but was activated on Saturday.

To get to Lidge on Sunday, Myers (0-0. 5.40 ERA) will have to fare better than he did in his last start - an 11-6 loss to the Washington Nationals on Monday. The righthander surrendered four runs - three earned - and five hits over five innings.

While Myers may be adjusting to his new role, Edinson Volquez (NR) will be making his first start with the Reds after coming over in an offseason trade with the Texas Rangers.

The righthander, who made no more than eight starts in any of his three seasons with the Rangers, went 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA last season.
