Hamels, Phillies look to split series with Reds
Apr 7, 2008 - 1:09 PM Philadelphia (2-4) at Cincinnati (4-2) 12:35 pm EDTCINCINNATI (Ticker) - The Philadelphia Phillies will send their ace to the mound in hopes of splitting their four-game series with the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.
Cole Hamels (0-1, 1.12 ERA), who emerged as the staff ace in 2007, was a tough-luck loser in first outing of the season. He yielded just one run over eight innings but was outdueled by Tim Redding as the Phillies fell to the Washington Nationals, 1-0, on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old lefthander went 15-5 with a 3.39 ERA and 177 strikeouts last season - his second in the majors.
The Reds, however, will enter this contest with the momentum after Ken Griffey Jr.'s 594th career home run propelled them to a second straight win, an 8-2 triumph over the Phillies.
The 38-year-old Griffey is batting .263 (5-for-19) with a homer and five RBI on the young season.
For Cincinnati to pick up a third consecutive victory, they will need a solid outing from Bronson Arroyo (0-0, 3.60).
The righthander did not receive a decision in his first start of the season against Arizona, allowing four runs - two earned - and four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
