Mussina, Yankees look to salvage split against Rays

BRONX, New York (Ticker) - The New York Yankees look to gain a split of their four-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays when the teams clash on Monday.

Chien-Ming Wang pitched six-plus strong innings and Hideki Matsui hit a two-run homer to lead New York to its first victory of the series, 2-0, on Sunday.

Wang's pitching performance cooled off the Tampa Bay lineup, which had scored 19 runs in the first two games of the series and had not scored less than six in any of its four contests to begin the season.

Mike Mussina (0-1, 4.76 ERA) hopes to continue New York's momentum and improve on a mediocre first start. The veteran righthander gave up four runs - three earned - and eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts in losing to Toronto.

Mussina went 0-1 with a 7.59 ERA in two starts against the Rays last season, but was 3-1 with a 1.88 against Tampa Bay in 2006.

The Rays will counter with Jason Hammel (NR), who is making his first start of the season. The 25-year-old righthander went 3-5 with a 6.14 ERA last season. However, he did register one of his victories against the Yankees.
