Ankiel, Cardinals seek sixth straight win
Apr 7, 2008 - 1:29 PM St Louis (5-1) at Houston (2-5) 7:05 pm EDTHOUSTON (Ticker) - Rick Ankiel will hope to continue his great start as the St. Louis Cardinals go for their sixth consecutive victory Monday when they visit the Houston Astros for the first of a three-game series.
A converted pitcher, Ankiel has homered three times in his first six games.
The lefthanded slugger is batting .348 (8-for-23) with six RBI on the season. He belted a solo shot and added an RBI double in Sunday's 3-0 triumph over the Washington Nationals.
The Cardinals will send Todd Wellemeyer (1-0, 1.80 ERA) to the mound. The righthander yielded just one run and four hits with three walks and six strikeouts over five frames in an 8-3 triumph over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.
He will be opposed by Wandy Rodriguez (0-0, 7.20)), who allowed four runs and eight hits with six strikeouts over five innings Wednesday against the San Diego Padres.
The Astros are hoping to avoid a third straight loss after falling to the Chicago Cubs, 3-2, on Sunday.
Miguel Tejada blasted his first homer of the season - and first with Houston - in the seventh to tie it at 2-2, but Derrek Lee answered with a solo shot in the bottom half of the frame.
