Red Sox finally return home to face Tigers
Apr 8, 2008 - 12:15 PM Detroit (0-6) at Boston (3-4) 2:05 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) - With their trip of nearly 16,000 miles from Florida to Japan to Los Angeles to Oakland to Toronto to Boston now complete, maybe the Boston Red Sox can finally relax.
The Red Sox will endure their fourth opener of the young season on Tuesday when they host the winless Detroit Tigers.
At least during this opener the Boston players will have the honor of receiving their World Series rings before the first pitch.
Perhaps feeling some fatigue over the weekend, the Red Sox were swept by the Toronto Blue Jays, getting outscored 23-9 in the process. All-Star slugger David Ortiz is batting just .115 (3-for-26) so far with one homer.
Staff ace Josh Beckett made his first start of the season on Sunday and struggled at Toronto, allowing five runs while walking four in 4 2/3 innings.
But the Tigers have fared even worse, getting swept by the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox in consecutive series, culminating in an embarrassing 13-2 loss on Sunday night.
Tabbed as one of the top offenses in the game prior to the season, the Tigers are 28th in the majors in runs scored after the first week.
Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-0, 2.31 ERA) will take the mound for Boston on Tuesday, his third start already of the 2008 campaign.
The Japanese righthander struggled in the Tokyo opener but shined last week in Oakland, allowing one run and two hits while striking out nine in six innings to earn the win.
Detroit will counter with ageless lefthander Kenny Rogers (0-1, 3.00). The 43-year-old took a loss against Kansas City on April 2 despite yielding just two runs in six frames.
Rogers owns an 11-7 record with a 4.81 ERA in 47 career games - 25 starts - against the Red Sox.
