Surging Orioles set to face Rangers
Apr 8, 2008 - 12:18 PM Baltimore (5-1) at Texas (3-3) 2:05 pm EDTARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) - After a four-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners, the Baltimore Orioles will visit the Texas Rangers on Tuesday looking to hang on to their improbable position atop of the American League East.
The Orioles are one of the surprise teams in the early going this season, owning an early lead in the AL East despite the fact that the team is clearly rebuilding.
The bullpen has been a particularly pleasant surprise, owing an ERA of under 1.00 and getting significant contributions from newcomers Dennis Sarfate, who came over from Houston as part of the Miguel Cabrera trade, and closer George Sherrill, who came over from Seattle in the Erik Bedard deal.
Sarfate notched the win and Sherrill picked up his fourth save of the season in Monday's 5-4 win over Seattle. Aubrey Huff snapped a 4-4 deadlock with a solo homer in the eighth to provide the winning margin.
Baltimore will hand the ball to starter Brian Burres (0-0, 0.00 ERA) on Tuesday. The lefthander spent last season bouncing back and forth between the bullpen and the rotation and has begun this campaign in the same fashion.
He pitched an inning of scoreless relief on Opening Day for the Orioles and compiled a 6-8 mark with a 5.95 ERA in 37 games - 17 starts - in 2007.
The Rangers will counter with righthander Jason Jennings (0-1, 7.20). The veteran had a rough first outing for his new team on April 2, allowing four runs and five hits in five innings to take a loss against the Mariners.
