Yankees hit the road to face Royals

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - After opening the season with a seven-game homestand, the New York Yankees visit the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.

The Yankees began the season in an offensive funk but broke through for 11 hits in a 6-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, marking the first time this season they managed more than four runs in a contest.

The best offensive team in the majors last season, New York was led by Bobby Abreu and Hideki Matsui on Monday as both players scored twice.

The Royals have been strong to start the season, sweeping the Tigers to open the campaign and avoiding a sweep on Sunday by posting a 3-1 win over the Minnesota Twins.

The clubs will match young righthanders on Tuesday, with the Yankees handing the ball to Phil Hughes (0-0, 3.00 ERA). The 21-year-old did not earn a decision in his first start despite holding the Toronto Blue Jays to two runs and four hits in six innings.

Hughes struck out four and walked one before being pulled after 86 pitches.

Kansas City will counter with 27-year-old Brian Bannister (1-0, 0.00), who tossed seven scoreless innings in his 2008 debut April 2 against the Detroit Tigers.

Bannister yielded just two hits and did not walk a batter while striking out four.

Royals' pitching has allowed 16 runs - the lowest mark in the American League.
