Cardinals look to begin new winning streak
Apr 8, 2008 - 12:56 PM St Louis (5-2) at Houston (3-5) 8:05 pm EDTHOUSTON (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals came up on the wrong end of a dramatic ninth inning on Monday.
St. Louis hopes to have a different outcome on Tuesday when they face the Houston Astros in the second game of a three-game set.
The Cardinals had their five-game winning streak snapped, despite rallying from a 3-0 deficit in the ninth inning. Troy Glaus had an RBI single and Ryan Ludwick delivered a two-run double off Houston closer Jose Valverde to tie the game at 3-3.
However, Miguel Tejada hit his second home run as as member of the Astros - a two-run blast off Kyle McClellan - to win the game in the bottom of the frame.
St. Louis will send Brad Thompson (1-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound, looking to even the series. The righthander pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts in the Cardinals' 3-0 victory over Colorado on Thursday.
The Astros will counter with Shawn Chacon (0-0, 3.00), who pitched six solid innings in his first start.
Chacon surrendered two runs and five hits with four walks and four strikeouts, earning a no-decision in Thursday's 3-2 loss at San Diego.
Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee and J.R. Towles each hit solo blasts for Houston in Monday's win.
