Padres look to take advantage of hapless Giants
Apr 8, 2008 - 1:10 PM San Diego (5-3) at San Francisco (1-6) 10:15 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - The San Francisco Giants will be looking to earn their second win of the season and halt a four-game slide when they host the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.
Firmly in rebuilding mode after showing franchise icon Barry Bonds the door in the offseason, the Giants have not been able to find any offense through their first seven games, managing just 16 runs.
With Bonds and his major league record of 762 homers now unemployed, San Francisco has managed a major league-worst two blasts in the early going.
The Padres claimed an 8-4 win in the opener on Monday as Greg Maddux earned his 348th career win by carving up the weak Giants offense for seven innings. Adrian Gonzalez homered and scored four runs in the victory.
San Francisco will send its most promising young pitcher, Tim Lincecum (1-0, 2.25 ERA), to the mound Tuesday in search of his second win of the season.
The 23-year-old righthander allowed one run in four innings against the Dodgers last week, entering the contest after a rain delay in the third inning and shutting down the Dodgers.
San Diego will counter with lefthander Randy Wolf (0-0, 1.50), who made a stellar first impression on his new team in his first start last week.
The 31-year-old, who signed with the Padres as a free agent over the winter, allowed one run and five hits in six innings but did not factor in the decision against Houston.
