Jackson aims to end Rays' woes

Apr 10, 2008 - 12:17 PM Seattle (4-5) at Tampa Bay (3-5) 12:40 pm EDT

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - Edwin Jackson tries to halt the Tampa Bay Rays' four-game skid when the club hosts the Seattle Mariners on Thursday.

Jackson (1-0, 1.50 ERA) was solid in his season debut, yielding one run and five hits over six innings in a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees last week.

It was a nice start to the year for the righthander, who last season struggled with a 5-15 record over 32 appearances - 31 starts - and a 5.76 ERA.

On Wednesday, the Rays dropped their fourth straight game in the second of this three-game series as Jamie Burke and Adrian Beltre homered for Seattle in a 7-1 triumph.

"We just have to, obviously, swing the bats better," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "The approach at the plate has got to improve. We have to work better at-bats, and that's going to happen."

Miguel Batista (0-1, 6.00 ERA) takes the hill for the Mariners. The righthander gave up five runs in five frames during a 6-4 setback to the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. He owns a 5-4 mark with a 3.49 ERA in 21 career meetings against the Rays.

Rays All-Star Carl Crawford, who is batting .156 this season, is just four hits shy from reaching 1,000 for his career.
