Wainwright gets start as Cardinals open series with Giants
Apr 10, 2008 - 1:24 PM St Louis (7-2) at San Francisco (3-6) 10:15 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals and ace Adam Wainwright attempt to continue their early success when they visit the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday.
Albert Pujols blasted his first two home runs of the season and contributed a run-scoring single as the Cardinals defeated the Houston Astros, 6-4, on Wednesday night for their second straight win.
"I came out early today ... earlier than normal and I watched a couple of videos," Pujols said. "I made some adjustments at the plate because of some things that I saw the last couple of games that I was doing here."
Wainwright (1-0, 2.25 ERA) shined in his season debut, limiting the Washington Nationals to two runs in eight effective innings for a 5-4 victory on Saturday.
San Francisco counters with Kevin Correia (0-1, 6.00), who gave up four runs and six hits in six frames during a 5-4 loss at Milwaukee on Saturday.
The righthander will be making his second start against St. Louis, which has tallied nine runs in 14 innings off Correia over seven appearances.
Dan Ortmeier stroked the game-winning hit with two outs in the ninth inning on Wednesday, giving San Francisco its second win in a row with a 1-0 victory over the San Diego Padres.
As many observers anticipated heading into the season, the Giants' offense has struggled and is last in the majors with 20 runs.
