Diamondbacks' Webb looks to continue strong start

Apr 11, 2008 - 2:28 PM Colorado (4-5) at Arizona (7-2) 9:40 pm EDT

PHOENIX (Ticker) - Brandon Webb's strong start is yet another example of how spring training statistics mean nothing. Just ask the Colorado Rockies.

Webb looks to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a seventh straight win on Friday in the opener of a three-game series with the Rockies.

The 2006 Cy Young Award winner, Webb (2-0, 2.08) was rocked for 17 runs in 18 innings during his five spring starts. However, the righthanded sinkerballer has started 2008 by allowing just three earned runs in 13 innings.

The Rockies were first hand witnesses to Webb's dominance on Saturday as they managed just one run and five hits in seven innings of a 7-2 loss to Arizona.

The Diamondbacks led baseball with 32 one-run victories last season, but so far they've had more than enough production at the plate.

Mark Reynolds has been the offensive leader for the Diamondbacks, who are tops in the majors with 54 runs.

Reynolds leads baseball with six home runs and 13 RBI. The second-year pro went 6-for-13 with six RBI last weekend, leading Arizona to a three-game sweep in Colorado.

Rockies' ace Jeff Francis will try and slow the Diamondbacks. Francis (0-1, 7.11) was scheduled to start on Thursday but the series finale against Atlanta was postponed due to snow.

Francis faced Webb on Saturday and was rocked for five runs and 12 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
