Bonser, Twins seek third straight win
Apr 12, 2008 - 1:47 PM Minnesota (5-5) at Kansas City (6-4) 7:10 pm EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - If the Minnesota Twins are to make any noise in the American League Central this season, they are going to need to get some contributions from their young starters.
Boof Bonser will look to lead the Twins to their third straight win Saturday when they visit the Kansas City Royals.
Minnesota took the series opener on Friday, 5-0, behind a strong effort from the lone veteran on the staff - Livan Hernandez. Rookie Carlos Gomez drove in a pair of runs and Justin Morneau homered for the Twins.
Hernandez pushed his record to 3-0 on the season, and he and Scott Baker remain the only two Minnesota starters to earn a win this season.
Bonser (0-2, 4.15 ERA) will look to become the third on Saturday. The 26-year-old righthander has allowed three earned runs in each of his two starts this season, but has not received any help from the Twins offense, which has managed just one run in each of Bonser's first two outings.
He took the loss last Sunday against the Royals, yielding three runs in seven innings in the 3-1 setback. He is 2-5 with a 4.61 ERA in 10 career starts against Kansas City.
The Royals will counter with journeyman Brett Tomko (1-0, 1.29), who had an impressive first start for his eighth team in 12 major league seasons. The righthander held Minnesota scoreless through five innings while opposing Bonser last Sunday.
