Blue Jays look to clinch series vs. Rangers
Apr 12, 2008 - 2:02 PM Toronto (5-5) at Texas (5-5) 8:05 pm EDTARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) - The Toronto Blue Jays will be looking to clinch a series victory when they send ace Roy Halladay to the mound Saturday against the Texas Rangers in Arlington.
The Blue Jays snapped a three-game slide with an 8-5 win over the Rangers on Friday. Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay led the way for the offense, combining for five hits and five RBI.
The highlight may have come in the sixth inning when slow-footed catcher Greg Zaun successfully completed the back end of a double steal, taking home plate to push the lead to 5-2.
Scott Downs got the final two outs of the game to earn the save for Toronto, which has been having trouble in the ninth inning of late. Incumbent closer Jeremy Accardo is 0-2 with a 10.38 ERA so far this season.
Halladay (1-1, 4.20 ERA) is attempting to overcome a bad track record against the Rangers. The former Cy Young winner is just 6-5 with a 5.86 ERA in 17 career games against Texas.
The veteran righthander earned a win in his last start, yielding four runs in eight innings against the Boston Red Sox.
The Rangers will counter with Luis Mendoza, who will be making his first appearance of 2008 after beginning the season on the disabled list due to a blister on his pitching hand.
The 24-year-old righthander went 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in six appearances - three starts - last season.
