Phillies' Burrell looks to stay hot vs. Cubs
Apr 12, 2008 - 2:40 PM Chicago Cubs (6-4) at Philadelphia (5-6) 7:05 pm EDTPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- With Jimmy Rollins still sidelined, the Philadelphia Phillies look to climb back to .500 on Saturday, when they face the Chicago Cubs in the middle contest of a three-game series.
The reigning National League MVP sat out his third straight game Friday with a sprained left ankle, an injury he suffered in Tuesday's 5-2 victory over the New York Mets.
The Phillies dropped two straight without Rollins but Pat Burrell has picked up the slack in Rollins' absence. Burrell homered and drove in three runs to lead Philadelphia to a 5-3 victory in Friday's series opener against the Cubs.
Burrell, who is in a contract year, is hitting .400 (14-for-35) and leads the National League with a .857 slugging percentage. He has picked up where he left off at the end of last season, when he hit .295 with 19 home runs after the All-Star break.
Cole Hamels (1-1, 1.20) seeks his second straight win for the Phillies. The 24-year-old lefthander allowed two runs and five hits over seven innings in Monday's 5-3 victory over Cincinnati.
Hamels will be opposed by fellow lefthander Ted Lilly (0-1, 9.72), who allowed five runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings in his last outing. But Lilly did not get a decision as the Cubs posted a 10-8 victory over Pittsburgh on Monday.
Friday's loss snapped Chicago's five-game winning streak.
