A's take advantage of Carmona, down Indians
Apr 13, 2008 - 3:38 AM By Todd Krepop PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Fausto Carmona didn't provide an immediate return on the Cleveland Indians' investment.Lenny DiNardo allowed two runs in five innings and Bobby Crosby hit a three-run homer as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Indians, 7-3, on Saturday night.
Oakland has won five in a row and is an American League-best 8-4 in the young season.
"We are going at it, one game at a time," DiNardo said.
Carmona (1-1) could not find the strike zone all night long, walking a career-high eight batters in just 3 1/3 innings.
"My arm was behind my body and I couldn't throw strikes," said Carmona through a translator. "I am going to work hard in the bullpen and not let it happen again. I will not let it get in my head."
It was not the type of performance the Indians envisioned after locking up their young righthander to a long-term extension. Carmona signed a four-year, $15 million extension Thursday, and the deal could go as high as seven years $48 million if all the club options are picked up.
It is the largest guaranteed contract given to a pitcher before he was arbitration-eligible.
Already ahead 2-1 in the fourth, the A's extended their lead without a player taking the bat off his shoulder. Carmona was not close with most of his pitches, walking three consecutive batters to force in a run and give the A's a 3-1 lead.
"(Carmona) has some of the best stuff in the game," Crosby said. "We started drawing some walks and had to be more patient."
Cleveland manager Eric Wedge had seen enough and yanked Carmona with one out in the frame. The eight walks were the most allowed by an Indians starter since Bobby Ojeda issue eight in six innings on August 26, 1993, against the New York Yankees.
"(Carmona) had trouble finding it tonight," Wedge said. "The harder he worked to find it, the more trouble he had."
It was the second night in a row the A's have knocked out a 19-game winner from 2007 early. Oakland blasted C.C. Sabathia on Friday night for nine runs en route to a 9-7 victory.
Meanwhile, DiNardo (1-0) pitched well in his first start of the season. The lefthander was inserted into the rotation after the oft-injured Rich Harden went on the disabled list earlier this week and did not miss a beat.
DiNardo, who started the year in the A's bullpen, kept the Indians off balance before running out of gas in the sixth. The righthander allowed six hits and struck out four while not issuing a walk.
Crosby put the game out of reach in the seventh when his three-run shot capped a four-run inning.
The A's grabbed a 2-0 lead on Daric Barton's two-run single in the third off Carmona.
