Niemann to make major league debut for Rays
Apr 13, 2008 - 1:12 PM Baltimore (7-4) at Tampa Bay (5-6) 1:40 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - With two of their top starters toiling on the disabled list, the Tampa Bay Rays will reach down into the minors and pull up another top arm.
Righthander Jeff Niemann will make his major league debut Sunday when the Rays host the Baltimore Orioles.
Tampa Bay placed righthander Matt Garza on the DL last week with nerve irritation in his arm. He joins ace Scott Kazmir, who has been out since spring training with an elbow injury.
While the Rays were once completely devoid of pitching depth in their system, they now boast some of the top prospects in the game, including Wade Davis, Jake McGee and 2007 No. 1 overall draft pick David Price.
On Sunday, Niemann (NR) will get his shot to impress the Tampa brass. Drafted fourth overall in 2004, the 6-9, 280-pound righthander from Rice University has posted a 13-9 record with a 3.57 ERA in 52 minor league appearances.
He has dealt with minor shoulder issues since being drafted, including having surgery after the 2005 season to shave down the joint between his collarbone and shoulder.
The Orioles will counter with lefthanded swingman Brian Burres (1-0, 1.29 ERA). The 27-year-old has made one appearance in relief and one start this season, allowing one run and seven hits in six frames to earn a win last Tuesday at Texas.
Ramon Hernandez homered in the top of the ninth inning to snap a tie and lift Baltimore to a 3-2 win on Saturday.
