Tigers still in search of offensive vs. White Sox

Apr 13, 2008 - 1:34 PM Detroit (2-9) at Chi White Sox (6-4) 2:05 pm EDT

CHICAGO (Ticker) - The Detroit Tigers continue to be the story of the majors this season, but not in a good way.

The Tigers will be hoping to avoid a yet another embarrassing loss when they visit the Chicago White Sox in the rubber game of a three-game series on Sunday.

Last in the American League in runs scored, Detroit was nearly the victim of a no-hitter on Saturday when Chicago's Gavin Floyd went 7 1/3 innings before surrendering a single to Edgar Renteria.

The Tigers managed just two hits in the contest, dropping their team average down to .229 - the worst mark in the American League. Miguel Cabrera, Gary Sheffield and Placido Polanco each went 0-for-3 on Saturday and are all currently batting .167 or worse.

Detroit made some big moves in the offseason to bring in more offense with Renteria, Cabrera and Jacque Jones, pushing their payroll up to second in the majors at over $138 million. But the club has managed just seven homers thus far in 2008.

Pitching has also been a point of concern, as the Tigers own the worst team ERA in the majors at 5.60.

Veteran Kenny Rogers (0-2, 3.38 ERA) will look to post a rare quality start when he makes his third start of the season on Sunday. The lefthander got knocked around by the Boston Red Sox last Tuesday, yielding three runs - two earned - and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. The Tigers have yet to score a run in either of Rogers' starts, getting outscored by a combined 9-0.

The White Sox will counter with righthander Javier Vazquez (1-1, 5.25). The 31-year-old picked up a win in his last outing, holding the Minnesota Twins to three runs and seven hits over seven frames while striking out eight.
