First-place A's set to host Mariners
Apr 16, 2008 - 12:43 PM Seattle (7-8) at Oakland (9-6) 10:05 pm EDTOAKLAND, California (Ticker) - The Oakland Athletics have been one of the more surprising teams in the early going this season. They will look to hang on to first place in the American League West when they host the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
Firmly in rebuilding mode, the A's were expected to finish near the bottom of the pack this season as they waited for some of their young talent to develop.
But some surprising pitching performances have kept them near the top of the West for the first few weeks of the season.
Youngsters Greg Smith and Dana Eveland have been effective so far and solid contributions from veterans Lenny DiNardo, Joe Blanton and Rich Harden have the staff ranked third in the AL with a 3.35 team ERA.
Nonetheless, the Mariners could give the A's pitching staff a test in this two-game series.
Seattle produced its best offensive game of the season on Tuesday, putting 11 runs on the board against the Kansas City Royals while matching a club record with five sacrifice flies.
Blanton (1-2, 4.15 ERA) will get the call on Wednesday for Oakland. The hefty righthander picked up his first win last Friday at Cleveland and has already made four starts this season due to the club's trip to Japan last month.
The Mariners will counter with phenom Felix Hernandez (1-0, 1.66). The 22-year-old righthander has allowed just four runs in 21 2/3 innings this season, though all four came last Friday against the Angels.
