Cubs looking to continue offensive outburst

Apr 17, 2008 - 1:18 PM Cincinnati (6-9) at Chicago Cubs (9-5) 2:20 pm EDT

CHICAGO (Ticker) - The Chicago Cubs try to sweep a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds when the teams meet on Thursday.

The Cubs have used an offensive outburst to take the first two games of the series.

Chicago pounded out nine runs and 14 hits in the series opener before posting a 12-3 victory on Wednesday on the strength of 13 hits, including a solo home run by Derrek Lee.

The 32-year-old first baseman is off to a red-hot start this season and enters Thursday's contest with six home runs and 13 RBI while posting a .393 batting average. A two-time Gold Glove award winner, Lee also has logged three hits in each of his last three games.

Ted Lilly (0-2, 9.95 ERA) tries to get on track after a miserable start to the season when he takes the mound for the Cubs.

The 32-year-old lefthander has yet to make it through the fifth inning in his first three starts and lasted just 4 1/3 innings after allowing five runs and seven hits as Chicago suffered a 7-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.

Righthander Edinson Volquez (1-0, 0.87) counters for the Reds and is coming off a solid performance.

The 24-year-old pitched five scoreless innings, surrendering just three hits but did not factor in the decision after he was removed following a rain delay during Cincinnati's 1-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.
