Resurgent Tigers aim for fourth straight win
Apr 17, 2008 - 1:49 PM Detroit (5-10) at Cleveland (5-10) 7:05 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) - The Detroit Tigers have begun to shake off the cobwebs.
The suddenly red-hot Tigers aim for their fourth straight win on Thursday in the finale of an abbreviated two-game series.
Edgar Renteria blasted a grand slam and equaled his career high with five RBI as the Tigers pounded C.C. Sabathia for nine runs en route to a 13-2 victory on Wednesday.
Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in five runs as the Tigers pounded out 17 hits. Detroit scored just 33 runs in its first 12 games, but has scored 30 during its winning streak.
With the Tigers' offense finally clicking, Fausto Carmona (1-1, 2.20 ERA) will need to put his worst start of the season behind him in hurry. The righthander allowed three runs and two hits, while walking eight in 3 1/3 innings of a 7-3 loss to Oakland on Saturday.
Cleveland, which has lost four straight, will try to snap out of its funk against struggling Detroit ace Justin Verlander.
Verlander (0-2, 6.52) has lost two straight starts, allowing 10 earned runs over his last 13 1/3 innings. The righthander allowed six runs and four hits in 7 2/3 innings of a 7-0 loss to Chicago on Saturday.
