Smoltz looks to dazzle again for Braves

MIAMI (Ticker) - John Smoltz hopes to give the Atlanta Braves a lift in the finale of a three-game series with the Florida Marlins on Thursday.

Smoltz (2-0, 0.82 ERA) has been unbelievable in two starts this season, allowing just one run and seven hits through 11 combined innings. The veteran righthander is just 14 strikeouts away from becoming the 16th pitcher in history to reach the 3,000 mark.

Atlanta would like Smoltz to eat up some innings once again, considering closer Rafael Soriano and setup man Peter Moylan are both on the 15-day disabled list with sore right elbows.

The Marlins send Ricky Nolasco (1-0, 4.22) to the hill in the hopes of completing a three-game series sweep. Nolasco registered his first win of the season despite allowing six runs in five innings at Houston on Friday.

It was the righthander's first start since May 17, 2007 due to elbow trouble that limited him to five games last season.

Nolasco is 1-1 with a 1.82 in five career appearances - four starts - against the Braves.

Mike Jacobs stroked his sixth home run and Luis Gonzalez added a two-run pinch-hit homer, leading the Marlins to a 6-5 victory over the Braves on Wednesday.
