Jackson drives in four as D'Backs rock Maddux

Apr 19, 2008 - 5:23 AM PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres needed a rainout in the worst way. Too bad they were in the desert.

Conor Jackson homered and fell a double shy of the cycle as the Arizona Diamondbacks cruised to a 9-0 victory over the weary Padres on Friday.

Jackson and Chris Young each had two-run singles and Chris Snyder capped the huge frame with a two-run double off Greg Maddux, who was looking for career win No. 350.

The Padres were coming off a 2-1, 22-inning loss to the Colorado Rockies on Thursday - the longest game in franchise history - and desperately needed a vintage performance out of Maddux.

San Diego burned through six relievers in the 6-hour, 16-minute marathon. Instead, the former Cy Young Award winner was not sharp early as the Diamondbacks sent 11 men to the plate in the six-run first.

"It doesn't matter if you came off a 22-inning game or an off-day, it is not the best way to start," Padres manager Bud Black said. "If you talk to those guys they are not going to make any excuses about a late arrival or long games. We got beat by a hot team and a good pitcher."

"We were looking to try and do that but it doesn't happen every time," said Arizona manager Bob Melvin of scoring runs early. "But against a team that had a travel issue, we tried to jump on them early."

Dan Haren (3-0) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst, allowing just three hits in seven innings. The righthander struck out three and walked one.

Meanwhile, Maddux (2-1) was not effective, but did manage to save the bullpen as he lasted seven innings. The future Hall of Famer allowed nine runs and 13 hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

"I wasn't locating good and they didn't miss nothing," Maddux said. "I made a lot of mistakes and they hit almost everyone."

Maddux fell to 2-11 with a 5.29 ERA vs. Arizona, the only team he has a losing record against.

"There is nothing about it," said Maddux of his struggles vs. Arizona. "I didn't pitch good. Throwing down the middle ain't gonna work. I have to locate better I have to pitch off my fastball and I never got that established."

Maddux also said the marathon game was not a factor in his performance.

"No, we are pros, dude. We are used to that stuff," he said. "Their guys pitched really good and I didn't. It is not that big of a deal to stay up a couple of hours longer than you usually do. You sleep in a couple of hours longer. That had nothing to do with it."

Young led off the game with a single and Eric Byrnes followed suit. One batter later Jackson plated both with a triple to right-center. Mark Reynolds reached on an infield single and Justin Upton hit a two-run single to center for a 4-0 lead.

Snyder then made it 6-0 with a double to right, and Jackson made it 7-0 with a solo homer in the second.

Jackson had a shot for the cycle in the sixth when his fly ball to center hit off Jim Edmonds' glove. However, he slid in with his second triple of the game, which plated Byrnes for an 8-0 lead. Reynolds capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

"Yeah, I thought about it," said Jackson of stopping at second base to notch his first career cycle. "I am not going to lie, of course it crossed my mind, but one out and a man on third was pretty appealing."
