Surging Tigers set to face McGowan, Blue Jays
Apr 19, 2008 - 11:41 AM Detroit (6-11) at Toronto (8-9) 1:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) - After playing the first two weeks as if they were asleep at the wheel, the Detroit Tigers are waking up.
The Tigers will go for their fifth win in six games when they visit the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.
Detroit, which remade its offense in the offseason and boasts seven former All-Stars in the lineup, began the season 2-10 while scoring just 33 runs to rank last in the major leagues.
But the past week has been much different, as the club has posted 39 runs in the last five contests while winning four of five.
Newcomers Miguel Cabrera and Edgar Renteria have led the charge, with holdovers Carlos Guillen, Magglio Ordonez and Gary Sheffield finding their strokes.
The Tigers earned an 8-4 win in the series opener Friday, as Renteria homered and drove in three. Cabrera doubled twice and drove in a run and Guillen scored twice.
The Blue Jays will send Dustin McGowan (0-1, 3.71 ERA) to the mound looking to slow Detroit's charge. The 26-year-old righthander has yet to earn a win this season despite allowing under four runs in each start.
McGowan allowed 10 hits and three runs in six innings on Monday at Baltimore to suffer his first loss of the season, but has stifled batters by recording 16 strikeouts in 17 innings this season.
Detroit will counter with righthander Jeremy Bonderman (1-1, 4.58). The 25-year-old surrendered seven runs - four earned - in 6 1/3 Monday against Minnesota, but was bailed out as the offense posted 11 runs.
