Orioles take aim at Kennedy, Yankees
Apr 19, 2008 - 1:16 PM NY Yankees (9-9) at Baltimore (10-7) 7:05 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) - The Baltimore Orioles had little trouble with one of the New York Yankees' vaunted trio of young pitchers on Friday. They'll try to take out a second member of the trifecta when they host the Yankees on Saturday.
The Orioles pounded 21-year-old Phil Hughes for five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings on Friday, knocking the righthander out of the game in the midst of a seven-run sixth inning.
Baltimore got five RBI singles in the decisive sixth frame and Luke Scott scored a pair of runs in the 8-2 victory Friday.
Ian Kennedy (0-1, 8.74 ERA) will look to quiet the Orioles' bats and claim his first win of the season Saturday. The 23-year-old righthander was solid in his last start, allowing three runs in six innings Monday at Tampa Bay, but did not factor in the decision.
Monday's outing marked the first time this season that Kennedy made it past the third inning. Known for his control, he has uncharacteristically walked eight batters in 11 1/3 innings this season.
Joba Chamberlain, the third member of the Yankees' trio, remains out to be with his ailing father.
Baltimore will counter with lefthander Brian Burres (1-1, 5.40). The converted reliever got knocked around last time out, surrendering six runs in 4 2/3 innings in a loss at Tampa Bay.
