Surging Red Sox face Jennings, Rangers

BOSTON (Ticker) - The last thing struggling Jason Jennings needed was for David Ortiz to find his swing.

Ortiz hit a grand slam in the Boston Red Sox 11-3 win over Texas on Friday, giving Jennings a preview of what he'll have to deal with Saturday when the teams continue the series.

Ortiz entered Friday's contest 7-for-63 with one homer in 16 games, but after his two-hit, five-RBI game, it appears the lefthanded slugger is regaining his touch.

Boston's offense did not stop with Ortiz, as Dustin Pedroia hit his first blast of the season and rookie Jed Lowrie had two hits and an RBI in the thrashing.

That is bad news for Jennings (0-3, 8.79 ERA), who has been anything but a reliable starter since signing with Texas in the offseason.

The veteran righthander was shelled for seven runs - six earned - in 4 2/3 innings last time out and has yet to record an out in the sixth inning through three starts this season.

He has allowed 19 hits and walked 10 batters in 14 1/3 frames.

The Red Sox will counter with lefthander Jon Lester (1-2, 5.31). The 24-year-old has had one stellar start this season - tossing 6 2/3 scoreless frames on April 2 - but has allowed 12 runs over 13 2/3 innings in his other three starts combined.

Lester has had trouble with his command, walking 15 batters in 20 1/3 total innings.
