Longoria leads Rays against White Sox

Apr 19, 2008 - 1:31 PM Chi White Sox (10-6) at Tampa Bay (7-10) 7:10 pm EDT

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - Rookie Evan Longoria is living up to expectations.

Longoria and the Rays try to bounce back from a loss when they continue their three-game series with the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Longoria - who is batting .304 with a home run and four RBI in seven games after being called-up from Class-AAA Durham last Saturday - had a double, a walk and drove in a run as the Rays suffered a 9-2 setback to the White Sox in the series-opener on Friday.

The loss came just hours after the Rays locked up Longoria for almost a decade as the third baseman inked a nine-year contract - the longest in franchise history. The contract guarantees Longoria to make $17.5 million.

The Rays need Longoria to keep producing when Andy Sonnastine (1-1, 8.80 ERA) takes the mound on Saturday.

The 25-year-old righthander allowed seven runs and nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings, but did not factor in the decision during Monday's 8-7 loss to the New York Yankees.

Mark Buehrle (1-1, 5.74) counters for the White Sox after suffering his first loss of the season on Monday during a 2-1 setback to the Oakland Athletics. The veteran lefthander surrendered just two earned runs and nine hits in seven innings.
