Blue Jays look to continue momentum without Thomas
Apr 21, 2008 - 1:10 PM Detroit (6-13) at Toronto (10-9) 12:37 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) - The Toronto Blue Jays aim for their third straight win when they close out a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers on Monday.
Toronto has won the past two games without slugger Frank Thomas, who was benched on Saturday and then released before Sunday's 5-3 victory.
Thomas, who joined the Blue Jays last season, had gotten off to a terrible start this year, batting .167 in 16 games with three home runs and 11 RBI.
"Out of respect for his career," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "It's not fair to him, sitting around and becoming a part-time player - it's really not. I know he wasn't going to be happy with that and we can definitely understand that."
Without the "Big Hurt", diminutive shortstop David Eckstein supplied the power for Toronto with a three-run homer in the fourth inning. The two straight wins have come after the Blue Jays lost six consecutive home games.
Shaun Marcum (2-0, 2.61 ERA) looks to continue Toronto's momentum and his strong start to the season when he takes the mound for the Blue Jays.
The righthander picked up his second win of the season, allowing two runs and four hits over 6 2/3 innings in an 11-3 victory over Baltimore last Tuesday.
The Tigers will counter with rookie righthander Armando Galarraga (1-0, 2.70), who is coming off his first major league victory.
Galarraga, 26, gave up two runs and just one hit with no walks in 6 2/3 innings as Detroit defeated Cleveland, 13-2, on Wednesday. The righthander hit a batter and struck out six.
