Diamondbacks hope to rebound vs. Giants

Apr 21, 2008 - 2:06 PM San Francisco (8-11) at Arizona (13-5) 9:40 pm EDT

PHOENIX (Ticker) - The Arizona Diamondbacks will be looking to recover from a rare loss when they host the San Francisco Giants for the start of a two-game series Monday.

The Diamondbacks have been the best team in the majors this season, leading all of baseball in both runs scored and runs allowed. Their 116-65 run differential has been spurred by an offense that continues to mature and a veteran pitching staff that keeps getting better.

Arizona fell, 9-4, on Sunday to have its four-game winning streak snapped. Randy Johnson allowed just one run through the first five innings but hit a wall in the sixth in just his second start since coming off the disabled list.

The Giants have been the worst team in the majors at scoring runs this season, managing just 61 in 19 games.

But San Francisco pounded out 14 hits in an 8-2 thrashing of the St. Louis Cardinals, eclipsing its run total from the previous four games combined.

The Giants will have a tough test in the form of righthander Micah Owings (3-0, 2.29 ERA) on Monday. The 25-year-old beat San Francisco in his last start on Tuesday, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out six in six innings.

The Giants will counter with righthander Kevin Correia (1-2, 4.12). The converted reliever got knocked around by Arizona last Tuesday, yielding five runs in six innings to suffer the loss.
