McLouth lone bright spot for dismal Pirates
Apr 22, 2008 - 1:25 PM Florida (12-7) at Pittsburgh (7-12) 7:05 pm EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) - The only thing going right for the Pittsburgh Pirates is the play of Nate McLouth.
The Pirates try to snap a six-game losing streak on Tuesday when they conclude a brief two-game series against the Florida Marlins.
Starter Matt Morris gave up eight earned runs to the Marlins on Monday night at PNC Park as Pittsburgh dropped its sixth straight game, 10-4, in front of a sparse crowd of 8,444.
Despite the loss, McLouth extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a single to right field in the eighth inning after going hitless in his first three at-bats.
McLouth's streak of hitting safely in each of the Pirates' first 19 games is the second highest to start a season in team history behind Charlie Grimm's 25-game streak in 1923, which is also a National League record.
The 26-year-old center fielder is batting .375 this season with three home runs and 16 RBI.
Lefthander Paul Maholm (0-2, 5.28 ERA) takes the mound for the Pirates on Tuesday while Ricky Nolasco (1-1, 6.46) counters for the Marlins, who are seeking their fourth straight win.
