Hinske off to hot start for Rays
Apr 23, 2008 - 1:05 PM Toronto (10-11) at Tampa Bay (9-11) 7:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - Eric Hinske has been a pleasant surprise for the Tampa Bay Rays this season.
Hinske and the Rays go for their second straight win on Wednesday when they continue a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
The 30-year-old Hinske, who was the 2002 American League Rookie of the Year, has failed to build on the potential he displayed early in his career.
However, the Rays' right fielder is batting .327 with five home runs and 10 RBI this campaign. Hinske missed hitting for the cycle by a single on Tuesday as the Rays posted a 6-4 victory over the Blue Jays in the series opener.
Hinske may have a hard time staying hot against Wednesday's starter Roy Halladay (2-2, 3.27 ERA), who allowed four runs and 11 hits while walking one and striking out six in his second straight nine-inning outing on Thursday.
Despite the strong start, the righthanded 2003 AL Cy Young winner suffered the loss as the Mariners dropped a 4-1 decision to the Texas Rangers.
Jason Hammel (1-1, 4.26) toes the rubber for the Rays after he surrendered three runs in six innings and picked up the win during Thursday's 7-3 victory against the Minnesota Twins.
