Athletics winning despite overhaul
Apr 25, 2008 - 1:34 PM Oakland (14-9) at Seattle (11-12) 10:10 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) - In the midst of an overhaul, the Oakland Athletics are still finding ways to stay competitive.
The Athletics go for their sixth win in the last seven games on Friday when they open a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners.
Oakland appeared to be heading toward a rebuilding year after trading staff ace Dan Haren to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a package of players during the offseason.
However, on the strength of an American League-best 3.19 team ERA, the Athletics find themselves tied for first place in the AL West Division with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (14-9).
One of the key players acquired in the Haren trade is Friday's starter Dana Eveland (2-1, 1.90 ERA), who allowed just one run and three hits in 5 2/3 innings on Sunday.
The 24-year-old lefthander walked four and struck out three, leading Oakland to a 7-1 victory against the Kansas City Royals.
Miguel Batista (2-2, 4.38) tries to give the Mariners their seventh consecutive victory against the Athletics when he toes the rubber on Friday.
The 37-year-old Batista was dominant in his last start, pitching 7 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing eight hits while striking out eight during Sunday's 4-2 victory against the Angels.
