Peralta, Indians seek fifth straight win
Apr 26, 2008 - 1:38 PM NY Yankees (12-12) at Cleveland (11-12) 3:55 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) - Jhonny Peralta will attempt to lead the Cleveland Indians to their season-high fifth consecutive victory Saturday when they host the New York Yankees in the second of a three-game series.
Peralta drove in four runs - including a crucial three-run homer - as the Indians posted a 6-4 triumph over the Yankees on Friday. The 25-year-old shortstop is batting .256 with five home runs and 10 RBI this season.
Peralta's three-run shot in the fifth inning Friday gave Cleveland a 4-3 edge and Franklin Gutierrez followed with a solo shot to nearly the same spot in left center to extend the advantage.
The win ended an eight-game regular season losing streak to New York and the Indians will hope Jeremy Sowers can continue their good fortune.
Sowers, who spent the first portion of this campaign with Class AAA Buffalo, went 1-6 with a 6.42 ERA in 13 starts last season.
He will be opposed by young righthander Ian Kennedy (0-2, 9.64), who uncharacteristically struggled with his control this season. The 23-year-old has already relinquished 13 walks over 14 frames this season.
Kennedy gave up four runs on five hits and five walks last Saturday as the Yankees fell to the Baltimore Orioles, 6-0.
Alex Rodriguez returned to the lineup Friday after missing the previous three games with a strained right quadriceps. The reigning American League MVP went 0-for-4.
