Zambrano hopes to help Cubs avoid thrid straight loss
Apr 26, 2008 - 1:45 PM Chicago Cubs (15-8) at Washington (8-16) 7:10 pm EDTWASHINGTON (Ticker) - With Carlos Zambrano on the mound, the Chicago Cubs hope to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season when they face the Washington Nationals.
After winning six straight contests, the Cubs have hit a slight rough patch. Nationals backup catcher Will Nieves blasted a walk-off home run - the first of his career - to hand Chicago its second loss in a row and lift Washington to a 5-3 victory Friday.
Zambrano (3-1, 2.67 ERA) will hope to put an end to the struggles. The 26-year-old righthander was sensational in his last outing, allowing one run and five hits with four strikeouts over seven innings during Monday's 7-1 win over the New York Mets.
The fiery Venezulan has lasted at least six innings in each of his five starts this season.
The Nationals will counter with struggling lefthander Matt Chico (0-4, 6.04), who is trying to avoid his fifth straight loss in as many starts.
The 24-year-old Chico was roughed up for six runs and eight hits with three walks and no strikeouts over four frames in Monday's 7-3 setback to the Atlanta Braves.
Chico will hope to contain Derrek Lee and the rest of the Cubs offense. Lee is batting .357 with seven home runs and 18 RBI this season.
