Red Sox hope to stop slide behind Buchholz
Apr 26, 2008 - 1:45 PM Boston (15-10) at Tampa Bay (12-11) 7:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - The Boston Red Sox will look to stop a three-game slide with rookie Clay Buchholz when they visit the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.
After surrendering leads in a pair of losses to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Wednesday and Thursday, the Red Sox allowed advantages of 3-0 and 4-3 slip away in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Rays in 11 innings.
Carl Crawford started the rally in the 11th inning with a single. He then stole second base and came around to score on Nathan Haynes' game-winning single.
Boston's bullpen has struggled all season, compiling a 5.38 ERA thus far after leading the majors in the category last season. Mike Timlin allowed the winning run Friday and owns a club-worst 13.50 ERA.
With the way the relief corps has been struggling, the Red Sox will need Buchholz (1-1, 4.79 ERA) to go deep into the game Saturday.
The 23-year-old righthander had his best start of the season Monday against Texas, tossing six scoreless frames while striking out six to earn his first win of the campaign.
Buchholz has had some problems with his command this season and needed 103 pitches to get through six innings Monday.
Tampa Bay will go for its fourth straight win Saturday with Edwin Jackson (2-2, 4.63) on the mound. The 24-year-old has lost his last two starts, allowing 11 runs in 9 1/3 total innings against the Yankees and the White Sox.
The two poor outings come after Jackson opened the season with back-to-back solid outings, yielding one runs and seven hits in 14 combined innings.
