Mariners, Athletics set for rubber match
Apr 27, 2008 - 1:33 PM Oakland (15-10) at Seattle (12-13) 4:10 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle Mariners host the Oakland Athletics in the rubber game of a three-game series Sunday.
After missing nearly three weeks of action, ace Erik Bedard helped the Mariners end a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory Saturday.
Bedard, who had not made a start since April 8 with inflammation of the left hip, looked dominant in his return from the disabled list. He allowed just two hits through 6 2/3 innings, striking out four.
Felix Hernandez (2-0, 1.67 ERA) will hope for similiar success Sunday.
The 22-year-old Venezuelan righthander did not receive a decision in his last outing, yielding two runs with seven strikeouts over seven innings during Tuesday's 4-2 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles.
The Athletics will counter with Joe Blanton (1-4, 4.32), who is looking to avoid his third straight loss in as many starts. The righthander gave up five runs - four earned - and nine hits with seven strikeouts over 7 2/3 frames in Tuesday's 5-4 setback to the Baltimore Orioles.
Oakland is hoping to record its fourth win in five games.
