Arroyo, Reds seek first three-game winning streak

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The Cincinnati Reds may have to keep scoring runs in bunches the way Bronson Arroyo has pitched this season.

Arroyo looks to end his early season struggles and help the Reds to their first three-game winning streak on Monday when they visit the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game series.

Brandon Phillips homered twice and Edinson Volquez struck out a career-high 10 in seven innings to lead Cincinnati to a 10-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.

The Reds scored 10 runs in each of the final two games of the series, and may need to keep it up with Arroyo on the mound.

Arroyo (0-3, 7.56 ERA) allowed eight runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings of a 9-3 loss to Houston on Wednesday. The righthander, who has lost nine straight starts in April dating to last season, has not made it through six innings in any start.

St. Louis, which is 2-1 on its season high nine-game homestand, will counter with Todd Wellemeyer.

Wellemeyer (2-0, 3.77) has just one decision in his last four starts. The righthander allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings of a 7-4 loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday.
