Red-hot Rays open long road trip vs. Orioles
Apr 29, 2008 - 12:30 PM Tampa Bay (14-11) at Baltimore (14-11) 7:05 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) - The Tampa Bay Rays go for their seventh straight win on Tuesday when they open a nine-game road trip against the Baltimore Orioles.
The Rays enter Tuesday's three-game series opener after sweeping both the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox.
James Shields threw a two-hit shutout Sunday as Tampa Bay completed a three-game series sweep of the Red Sox with a 3-0 victory.
The Rays, which are off to their best start in franchise history, have pulled into a three-way tie with Boston and Baltimore for first place in the American League East.
Jason Hammel (2-1, 4.32 ERA) looks to help the Rays continue their recent success when he takes the mound on Tuesday.
Hammel allowed three runs and four hits in six innings, walking four while striking out two. The 25-year-old righthander picked up his second straight win during Wednesday's 5-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Garrett Olson will likely be called up from Class AAA Norfolk on Tuesday to make the start in place of the injured Adam Loewen, who was placed on the disabled list Friday with left elbow soreness.
