Silva makes first start for Mariners following injury

Apr 29, 2008 - 12:39 PM Seattle (12-14) at Cleveland (12-14) 7:05 pm EDT

CLEVELAND (Ticker) - The Seattle Mariners hope righthander Carlos Silva is ready to go after leaving his last start due to injury.

After dropping each of their last two series, Silva and the Mariners look to get back on track when they open a three-game set against the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday.

Silva (3-0, 2.83 ERA) allowed just two runs and six hits in six innings during Wednesday 3-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, but was removed after 84 pitches with tightness in his right thigh.

The 29-year-old, who signed a four-year, $44 million contract with the Mariners during the offseason, has won five straight decisions dating back to 2007m but has struggled against the Indians during his career.

Silva allowed 16 runs and 27 hits in 21 2/3 innings while posting an 0-3 record against the Indians last season. For his career, the righthander is just 4-6 with a 5.30 ERA in 17 games.

Fausto Carmona (3-1, 2.89) counters for the Indians. The 24-year-old righthander surrendered four runs and nine hits in five innings, picking up his second straight win during Thursday's 9-6 victory against the Kansas City Royals.
