Glavine gets start as Braves face Nationals

Apr 29, 2008 - 1:18 PM Atlanta (12-13) at Washington (9-17) 7:10 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - Tom Glavine will come off the disabled list Tuesday and head straight to the mound as the Atlanta Braves visit the Washington Nationals for the opener of a two-game series.

Glavine (0-1, 2.38 ERA) was sent to the DL for the first time in his 21-year career after injuring his hamstring in the first inning of a 5-4 loss to the Nationals on April 13.

The 42-year-old Glavine lasted only 16 pitches in that one, yielding two runs and three hits without recording an out.

The Braves will need Glavine to step right in and perform. The club has lost four of their last six contests following a five-game winning streak and ace John Smoltz is now heading to the DL again with shoulder problems.

Glavine will be opposed by righthander Tim Redding (3-2, 3.67) in this one. The 30-year-old Redding lasted five innings in his last start, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks during Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the New York Mets.

Since that setback, Washington has won three of four games - including Sunday's 2-0 triumph over the Chicago Cubs.
