Red-hot Phillies ready for slumping Padres

Apr 30, 2008 - 1:01 PM San Diego (10-17) at Philadelphia (15-12) 7:05 pm EDT

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - The Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres are headed in opposite directions.

The Phillies look to continue their recent strong play when they resume a three-game series against the slumping Padres on Wednesday.

Philadelphia has posted a 7-2 record over its last nine games, averaging nearly six runs a contest over that span, including a 7-4 victory against the Padres on Tuesday.

With the recent hot streak, the Phillies are guaranteed to finish with a winning record in April for the first time since the 2003 season.

Meanwhile, the Padres have lost 11 of their last 13 contests due to their dismal offense. San Diego ranks last in the majors with a .225 team-batting average and 88 runs scored.

The Padres hope Wednesday's starter Chris Young (1-2, 3.77 ERA) can help them get back on track.

Young was absolutely dominant in his last start, allowing just one run and two hits while striking out 10 in seven innings. However, the offense cost Young the win as San Diego suffered a 1-0 setback to the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.

Jamie Moyer (1-1, 4.05), who has allowed just three runs in 12 innings during his last two starts, counters for the Phillies on Wednesday.
