Rays hope to build on strong April
May 1, 2008 - 11:59 AM Tampa Bay (15-12) at Baltimore (15-12) 12:35 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) - Coming off the best April in franchise history, the Tampa Bay Rays aim to take two of three games from the Baltimore Orioles when the teams close out their three-game set Thursday.
By virtue of Wednesday's 8-1 win over Baltimore, Tampa Bay went 15-12 in the month of April, the best record in the month since the club joined the league in 1998. This also marks the first time that Tampa Bay is three games over .500 this late in the season.
The Rays will turn to Matt Garza (0-0, 7.62 ERA) to carry the momentum into May as he makes his second start against the Orioles this season. He is coming off his best outing of the season as he allowed three runs and five hits over five innings but did not factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4, 11-inning victory over Boston.
The righthander is 3-0 with a 3.68 ERA lifetime against the Orioles but may be pitching for his spot in the rotation as ace Scott Kazmir is scheduled to return this weekend.
After having his scheduled start on Wednesday pushed back a day, Baltimore's Brian Burres (3-1, 2.49 ERA) hopes to continue his strong performance of late. He hasn't surrendered a run over 13 2/3 innings since permitting six in his only loss of the season - a 6-2 setback against the Rays on April 13.
Burres is coming off the longest outing of his career. The lefthander allowed three hits and struck out four in eight innings in Baltimore's 5-1 win over Chicago on Saturday.
