Perez looks to lead Nationals to fourth straight win
May 1, 2008 - 12:58 PM Pittsburgh (11-16) at Washington (10-17) 7:10 pm EDTWASHINGTON (Ticker) - The Washington Nationals aim for a season-high fourth straight win on Thursday as they host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a four-game series.
Felipe Lopez hit a two-out, bases-loaded single in the 12th inning to lead the Nationals to a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday as Washington improved to 5-2 on its 11-game homestand.
Odalis Perez (0-3, 3.31 ERA) looks to keep the momentum going. Perez has allowed just four earned runs and 16 hits in his last 18 innings. On Friday, the veteran lefthander allowed two runs and five hits in six innings of a 5-3 victory over Chicago.
Perez will try and slow a Pirates team that is coming off its most productive offensive outing of the season. Nate McLouth had two doubles and three RBI, and Xavier Nady also drove in three runs as Pittsburgh crushed the New York Mets, 13-1, on Wednesday.
Pirates starter Zach Duke (0-2, 5.34) has lost two straight starts and will look to rebound from a poor outing. The lefthander was tagged for six runs and nine hits in six innings of a 6-5 loss to Philadelphia on Friday.
